There's Music in the Air

Main Content Inline Small

There sound of music will soon be in the air on High Street as the Virginia Youth Symphony and ERM Media make the Old Colony Theatre located at 430 High St. their new home. Robert Ian Winston , the music director and principal composer, assembled a team of student performers, their parents and board members to assist with the $85,000 renovation. Together, the team transformed what was once a dilapidated old theatre that had its most recent use as a nightclub, into the New Colony Theatre. The theatre accommodates approximately 269 seats, office space, a small retail space for music sales and a piano recording studio. The theatre is expected to bring over 80 students and their parents to downtown Portsmouth twice a week, not only to make music but to make downtown Portsmouth a great family venue.  http://www.vyso.us

Featured Property: BASF Site

Main Content Inline Small

The BASF site is a nearly 50-acre waterfront site located along the Elizabeth River in the industrial area of Portsmouth referred to as West Norfolk. Once home to BASF and its Super Absorbent Polymers Plant, the property is now available for a long-term ground lease through LMR Inc. The site is easily accessible from Route 164, known as the Western Freeway, and is adjacent to the APM Terminals. It has a 400,000 lbs. truck/rail scale (80 x 20 ft. concrete bed), is served by rail, and is part of the Heartland Corridor, a Norfolk Southern rail line between Hampton Roads and Chicago which, by late summer 2010, will allow freight moving in double-stack trains to shave off 200 miles and up to a day’s transit time between the East Coast and the Midwest. While the processing plant has been demolished, the foundation slabs remain and can accommodate massive equipment load for nearly every type of construction and industrial use. Additionally, a 4,000 square foot maintenance shop remains which includes a 3 ton overhead track crane. Also, there are 5 large warehouses for storage. Primary feeders (23K volt power) are provided by Dominion Virginia Power and include a standby transformer. Four membrane lined ponds are on the property and provide a series of reservoirs to retain surface storm water runoff. A 750,000 gallon concrete skimmer pond also remains on the property. In addition to municipal water, the site is served by two deep water wells (640 ft. deep pumping 960 gpm). For more information, contact Portsmouth Economic Development at 757-393-8804 or LMR at 757-966.1082.
